Union Cabinet has approved Official Amendments to the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill 2019.
On Wednesday, Cabinet has approved official amendments to the Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill 2019 that will enable the states to use the unique identity number in the distribution of subsidies.
Many states had requested to consider the use of Aadhaar in their schemes.
Prakash Javadekar (Information and Broadcasting Minister) said the government has decided to make Aadhaar as identification document so that people can avail the benefit of state subsidies directly in their bank account and to eliminate middlemen.
The Act provides for the use of Aadhaar number as proof of identity of a person, subject to authentication.
The Bill replaces the provision to state that an individual may voluntarily use his Aadhaar number to establish his identity, by authentication or offline verification.
He said that the 128 crore people in the country have been issued Aadhaar cards.
